A Japanese “religious legal entity” (宗教法人), the “Universal Truth” (宇宙真理学会) has recently shot up google keyword search ranking in Japan.
According to the Japanese media e.g. the Sankei News, the Kanto Shingetsu Tax Office has accused the Universal Truth, a religious legal entity of the Kagawa Prefecture, of failure to report JPY1.4 billion (USD1.4 million) of income for a period of 7 years ending in February 2008. The article reports that the income related to Universal Truth's "love hotels" business and that the hotel charges were declared as non-taxable "religious offering" (布施)!
Universal Truth apparently operates 23 love hotels in Nagano (長野), Gunma (群馬), Niigata (新潟), Gifu (岐阜) and Shizuoka (静岡) prefectures.
Religious legal entity is a kind of charitable organization under Japanese tax law and enjoy a lower tax rate on its income.
It is not clear what are the religious principles or faith of Universal Truth.
